Tomorrow I’ll be departing for Accra! The past week has been packed with excitement and stress as I struggled to wrap up goodbyes with my friends and family, learned of my host community placement, and cut down my suitcase weight to 44 lbs.
I enjoyed celebrating my departure with my closest school and church friends as well as family friends and neighbors. Their well wishes and prayers mean the world to me; I can’t thank them enough.
The next 7 days were a whirlwind of learning from past YES students, furiously texting my cohort for last minute hurras and pointers, packing and repacking, and eventually getting around to cleaning my room. Thank you to the past YES Abroad Ghana students who answered all of my questions and tossed advice at me that I didn’t even think to ask. Your help has made this process much less nerve wracking.
Yesterday I enjoyed a late brunch with my mom and sushi with my dad before saying goodbye to my siblings after dinner. I spent the night finally paring down my luggage weight and was able to finish compiling my college, scholarship and internship info into my “applications” binder which I’m bringing along with me. Despite being abroad there are a number of deadlines I need to keep track of.
Early this morning I hopped on a plane to NYC and am anticipating the hurricane of information that comes with YES and AFS orientations. Worrying about sleep on the flight to Accra is definitely not a problem!
